Dr. Jun Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at The University of Alabama (Roll Tide). Prior to joining UA in 2018, he worked as a transportation planner (travel demand modeler) at Virginia Department of Transportation and as a post-doc at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Statistics from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2015. Before coming to the United States, he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering from Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST, in China).

Dr. Liu has served as the Principal Investigator, co-Principal Investigator, or key researcher of a broad range of projects sponsored by agencies including National Science Foundation, US Department of Transportation, US Department of Energy, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, State Departments of Transportation (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia), KTH, and local agencies. 

Dr. Liu currently serves as a Managing Editor for the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems: Technology, Planning, and Operations, a Handling Editor for Transportation Research Record: Journal of Transportation Research Board, and an Editorial Board Member for Accident Analysis & Prevention and the Journal of Safety Research. Additionally, he is a Paper Review Coordinator for TRB Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing (AED50) for TRB Annual Meetings and an Area Editor for The Joint COTA International Conference of Transportation Professionals. Dr. Liu has also served on the Organizing Committee for the Bridging Transportation Researchers (BTR) Conference (BTR#1, BTR#2, and BTR#3). 

Dr. Liu is a member of TRB Committee on Geo-spatial Data Acquisition Technologies (AKD80) and a member/friend of TRB Standing Committee on Transportation Safety Management (ACS10). He was (2016-2019) a member of TRB Standing Committee on Visualization in Transportation (AED80). Dr. Liu served on a NSF Panel for the Humans, Disasters, and the Built Environment (HDBE) Program, and also served on the panel for NCHRP 20-102(22):”State and Local Impacts of Automated Freight Transportation Systems. 

Apart from transportation (research, teaching and services), Dr. Liu enjoys dancing and choreography. He had worked with Circle Modern Dance (Knoxville, TN) as a dancer and choreographer during 2011-2015 and Richmond Chinese Choir & Dance Group as a performer and choreographer during 2016-2018. He loves to share thoughts through moves – that’s another way of visualizing ideas!!!
